What is a lagoon?

A lagoon is a shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water, such as a sea or ocean, by a barrier, such as a reef or sandbar. Lagoons are typically found in tropical and subtropical areas and can be either saltwater or freshwater. They are often home to unique ecosystems and diverse marine life, including fish, plants, and birds. Lagoons are also popular tourist destinations for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Some well-known lagoons include Laguna Beach in California, Laguna Churup in Peru, and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland.
